Applying to Upper Division

Berkeley Preparatory School’s admissions process is a holistic analysis of an applicant’s developmental, social-emotional, and academic ability and potential. Applications are available in early September, with a February 1 deadline. Admissions decisions are communicated in early March.  Applications received after the deadline will be considered for the waiting pool.

In order to be eligible for consideration for admission to Berkeley’s ninth grade, students must be enrolled and successfully complete a full year of Algebra I or higher and must be able to demonstrate a strong foundational understanding of Algebra I concepts. The math curriculum of the Upper Division begins with Geometry and Honors Geometry; Algebra I is not offered in the Upper Division.

  • Campus Visit

    • Parents are encouraged to schedule a campus visit to discuss the admissions process.
  • Application

    • Complete the online application.
    • Upload the applicant’s birth certificate and optional photograph.
    • Submit the non-refundable $75 application fee.
    • Once the application is submitted, you will be contacted by the Admissions Office to coordinate testing dates.
    • Application Deadline: February 1 - Admissions applications received after February 1st will be considered for our waiting pool.
  • Student Record Release Form

    • Print, sign and submit to the appropriate official at your child’s school (ie. registrar or school principal) after November 15.
    • Completed form and records should be mailed or emailed directly to Berkeley.
  • Teacher Recommendation Form

    • Print, sign, and submit after November 15.
    • A Teacher Recommendation Form is required from both your child’s current English and Math teacher.
    • As a courtesy, please include a stamped envelope addressed to the Berkeley Preparatory School – Upper Division Admissions Office or have the teacher scan and email the recommendation to
  • Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT)

    • All applicants for grades 9-12 are required to take the SSAT. The applicant’s family is responsible for individual registration. Please visit
    • Berkeley is offering the following on-campus dates: October 14, November 11, December 9, December 19, and January 6.
    • When registering, please select Berkeley (school code 1600) as a score recipient.
  • Berkeley Testing & Writing Sample

    • Expect Berkeley to confirm receipt of your application and schedule an appointment with the Admissions Office for the OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test) and a writing sample at Berkeley.
  • Berkeley Interview

    • The applicant’s interview will take place during his/her Berkeley testing visit.
  • Financial Aid

    If you anticipate requesting financial aid, please review our financial aid webpage for important deadlines and procedures.
Berkeley makes all admission decisions without regard to financial status. Families who have reviewed their financial situation and feel that help may be needed in paying tuition should apply for aid. Financial aid awards are available at any grade level to students who demonstrate need.
